Tasks and Assessments


Many high schools are changing their student graduation standards to include portfolios which contain performance tasks and assessments. Some schools offer RIDE(Rhode Island Department of Education) CIM(Certificate of Initial Mastery) tasks to be given in the classroom that teachers can administer and students can use in their portfolio. These tasks give teachers a way of assessing students' problem solving and communication skills and provides classroom-tested, real-world problems for instruction. The rest of the assessments or tasks must be found or generated by the teacher. Here is a list of tasks/assessments at the high school level that teachers can use. I have organized the list by subject so that you can use these particular tasks during the topic you are teaching.

Building your own task/assessment
Developing Effective Performance Tasks
  • Does the task match the desired outcomes?
  • Is it clearly defined?
  • Does it include choices?
  • Does it require critical thinking?
  • Is it authentic
  • Is it broad enough to measure several outcomes at once? Multiple skills?
  • Is it fair and free from bias?
  • Is the outcome really worth construcing a rubric to evaluate it?
  • Does it meet any of the standards your school uses?
